Five residents, including two children, jumped out windows to escape the blaze.

May 30--A fire that broke out late Wednesday in a garden-style apartment building in South Baltimore killed one man and left multiple others injured, including some who jumped from upper-level windows, according to Baltimore Fire Department officials.

Firefighters were alerted to the blaze in the 4000 block of Fairhaven Avenue in Curtis Bay at 10:37 p.m. and responded to find at least two people trapped in the building, including a man in a basement apartment and a woman in an upper level apartment, fire officials said.

Five other residents, including two children, had escaped the fire by jumping from windows, officials said.

Both the man and the woman trapped inside were rescued from the building, and they and the five residents who jumped were all taken to area hospitals, officials said.

The man rescued from the basement apartment has since died, officials said. His identity has not been released.

Conditions for the woman and the five other residents were not immediately available.

An investigation into the fire is ongoing.
