UINTAH -- Fire crews from multiple agencies responded Friday to a large house fire, at 2383 E. 6550 S.

Crews arrived on scene around 4:30 p.m., and much of the single-story house was engulfed in flames and smoke. Firefighters appeared the have the fire under control by 5:30 p.m., but homeowner Cari LaDrew was expecting the home to be near a total loss.

LaDrew, who has lived in the house for seven years, said no one was inside the home when the fire started, but she has four cats that were unaccounted for. Three dogs made it out OK, however, including one that neighbor Julie Kendell said an unknown good samaritan rescued from the home.

Neighbor Kerry Rollins was one of the first people on scene once the fire started, and he tried putting it out with a garden hose. At that point, Rollins said, the fire was contained to the back and corner of the house, but a firefighter stopped him from trying to extinguish the fire. Rollins wasn't sure if he could have put it out but said it would have been better than nothing.

"I at least wanted to try," he said.
