June 14--NORFOLK -- Fifteen people were displaced by an apartment fire this morning in the 800 block of E. Princess Anne Road
No injuries were reported, according to Battalion Chief Julian Williamson, Norfolk Fire-Rescue spokesman.
The fire was reported shortly after 6:50 a.m. and when firefighters arrived they found smoke and flames at the building, Williamson said.
Two people inside the apartment where the fire began were able to get out and warn their neighbors, Williamson said. The apartment did have working smoke detectors.
The blaze was under control before 7:25 a.m.
The apartment where the fire began had fire and smoke damage with other units sustaining smoke damage, Williamson said. Some residents of the other units likely will be able to go back home after an inspection of the roof and electrical system.
Firefighters had to cut a hole in the roof to ventilate the attic, Williamson said. The building has a common attic and an inspector will check its stability.
The American Red Cross said they are sending volunteers to help the residents.
Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the fire.
