June 16--Anniston firefighters responded early Sunday morning to a call of heavy smoke inside Saks High School.
The school's assistant principal, Derek Cobb, said a maintenance employee working on the lunchroom floors smelled smoke around 8:30 a.m. and alerted the Anniston Fire Department. Cobb said he arrived at the school about 8:45 a.m. and firefighters had largely extinguished the source of the smoke by that point. There were no visible signs of fire or damage to the outside of the building, Cobb said.
Firefighters told Cobb they wouldn't be able to fully assess the damage until Monday, but said it appeared to be only minor smoke and water damage to some second floor classrooms. Cobb said officials on the scene told him they did not suspect foul play.
Several fire and rescue vehicles were still at the scene as of noon Sunday and firefighters were assessing the damage. The Anniston Police Department's crime scene mobile unit was also in the parking lot of the building. Several firefighters declined to talk to a reporter. Attempts to reach officials at the Anniston Fire Department on Sunday were not immediately successful.
