June 23--SAN LEANDRO -- A firefighter who suffered second-degree burns in a blaze that killed three animals in the 200 block of MacArthur Boulevard has been released from the hospital, officials said Sunday.

The Alameda County Fire Department firefighter suffered burns to his shoulder and hands while tackling the fire that broke out Saturday, said Alameda County Battalion Chief Chuck Palmer.

Fire crews from San Leandro and Oakland responded to reports of smoke and fire about 2:50 p.m. When firefighters arrived, two people inside the home had already safely made it outside.

The extent of the fire damage was not immediately known, but officials did say two dogs and two birds were safely removed from the home. Two cats and one dog died.

A male firefighter suffered burns to his hand and shoulders was taken to a hospital to be treated and released, Palmer said. No one else was injured.

A preliminary investigation revealed the fire broke out in the garage area of the home, but the cause of the fire remained under investigation on Sunday, Palmer said.

The fire does not appear to be suspicious in nature, Palmer added.
