The mother was acting strangely before the fire, neighbors say.

June 30--An 18-month-old boy severely burned in a Church Hill fire died of his injuries Saturday, Richmond police said.

The boy and his 36-year-old mother were injured in the fire Tuesday at a row house in the 1200 block of North 30th Street.

Their identities have not been released.

Richmond police spokesman James Mercante said the case remains under investigation by major crimes and arson investigators.

Neighbors reported the mother had been acting erratically several hours before the fire.

She was pulled off the porch roof by firefighters, who then rescued the child from a front bedroom on the second floor. The fire was confined to the bedroom.

Citizens Against Crime founder Alicia Rasin, who received a call from neighbors concerned about the family hours before the fire, said the mother remains hospitalized.

Rasin brought the woman food, bottled water and soda, helped her with her air conditioner and left about 1 a.m. after it appeared the mother had calmed, she said.

The fire broke out about 7:40 a.m.
