July 13--JAFFREY -- A gunpowder explosion in a farmhouse Thursday shattered windows and blew out a door, but did not cause any serious injuries.

Jaffrey firefighters responded to 391 Nutting Road just before noon where a man had been sharpening an ax on a belt sander, Jaffrey Fire Chief David M. Chamberlain said. The sharpening let off some sparks, which flew into an open container of gunpowder.

It was a significant explosion that caused some minor flames and damage to walls and windows. The explosion also blew a sliding glass door 3 feet out of its frame, Chamberlain said.

The property is owned by Lee Sawyer, who received medical treatment on-site for minor burns and an injured eye, Chamberlain said. There were other flammable objects nearby, and he's fortunate that he wasn't injured more severely, Chamberlain said.

Firefighters spent about an hour and a half at the scene.
