Over 200 Take Pa. Firefighter Test For 40 Positions

Some 219 people have expressed interest in becoming a city firefighter and taken a written examination. From there, the 40 top scorers will take a pass-fail agility test.

July 15--City of Erie officials say that 219 people interested in becoming a city firefighter took a written examination on Saturday at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine.

The top 40 scorers on Saturday's test are then eligible to take a pass-fail agility test, tentatively scheduled for Sept. 28. Those who pass will be placed on the city's hiring list, ranked by their scores on the written test.

In May, 295 people returned applications for city firefighter posts to the city Human Resources Director Connie Cook's office. That means 74 percent of those who returned applications took Saturday's written test.

The pool includes African-American, Latino and female candidates, city officials have said. The 138-member Erie Bureau of Fire currently has four women, including one African-American. There are no African-American or Latino men in the bureau.
