Polk County firefighters saved four unconscious dogs after a fire in a mobile home destroyed the structure and killed three cats.

Aug. 10--Firefighters in Polk County rescued more than a dozen animals -- including four unconscious dogs -- after a mobile-home fire Friday morning.

No one was home when the fire broke out at 9:40 a.m. at 3256 Old Highway 60 in Mulberry, Polk County Fire Rescue said.

But at least 16 animals were trapped inside, including "six dogs, six cats and a multitude of exotic pets such as lizards and snakes," the agency said in a report.

"Four of the six dogs were unconscious when Fire Rescue arrived on-scene," the report said. "Fire rescue staff utilized pet oxygen masks and IVs and fluids to resuscitate the animals. All six dogs survived."

Three cats died and three cats survived.

"The surviving pets were transferred to SPCA Florida in Lakeland by Animal Control," the report said.

"The fire appeared to be an electrical fire that started in the dining room and spread through the kitchen and into the living room. The house is now in unlivable condition."

Most of the animals were contained to the bathroom and bedroom when crews found them.
