Sept. 03--UPDATE: A Cedar Rapids man was hospitalized Tuesday morning after hitting a Cedar Rapids fire engine.
Cedar Rapids Police Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said police are still investigating the incident, which occurred around 9:15 a.m., but what's clear at this time is the driver hit the fire engine at the intersection of First Street and F Avenue NW. Hamblin said the engine was on its way back to Station 1 and did not have its sirens activated.
The driver, 62-year-old Carl Burse, was initially handcuffed and placed under arrest, but was taken from the scene to a nearby hospital via area ambulance. Burse faces charges of driving with a suspended license and going the wrong way down a one-way street.
Northbound lanes of First Street were closed while officials processed the scene, but the intersection has since reopened.
