Kids Playing with Lighters Start Calif. Fire

One of the kids and his mother were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Sept. 22--Preschoolers playing with a lighter caused a small bedroom fire that sent two to the hospital and caused an estimated $10,000 in damage to the home, said Battalion Chief Alan Ernst of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority.

Neighbors of the home in the 1300 block of Oregon Drive doused the blaze with garden hoses shoved through the window before firefighters arrived, Ernst said.

Two preschoolers lit a napkin, which caught a mattress on fire and spread to the wall and ceiling, he said.

One of the children was taken to the hospital with singed eye lashes and his mother suffered smoke inhalation, Ernst said.
