Firefighter Hurt During Fire in Calif. Market

A Ventura County firefighter was injured when part of a ceiling fell down during a fire a the Red Barn Market.

Sept. 28--One firefighter was injured after responding to a large pallet fire that spread into a Ventura market early Saturday, officials said.

A structure fire was reported at 4:08 a.m. at Red Barn Market in the 900 block of North Ventura Avenue, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

A pallet was found on fire near the back of the market, officials said. The blaze spread into the market and caused heavy fire damage to about one-third of the store, Ventura firefighters said.

An injured firefighter was taken to Ventura County Medical Center after an interior ceiling collapsed, officials said. His condition was unknown.

The remaining areas of the Red Barn Market were exposed to smoke and heat damage, officials said.

A storage unit behind a 97 Cent Plus store nearby also caught fire, officials said.

Firefighters were able to knock the blaze down around 6:10 a.m., authorities said.

An investigator was still trying to determine the cause of the fire Saturday morning, officials said.

At least 14 units responded to the incident, officials said. Oxnard, Fillmore and Ventura County firefighters assisted in knocking down the blaze.

Ventura police provided traffic control in the area.
