Oct. 03--WINN, Maine -- Police and fire investigators are investigating a suspicious blaze that leveled a storage building at a business in northern Penobscot County early Thursday.

Mattawamkeag Fire Chief Mike Coombs said the storage building is adjacent to Winn Equipment and Parts on Route 2.

The business handles heavy equipment for the logging industry, according to Coombs. No equipment was damaged in the fire.

Crews were called to the scene shortly after 3 a.m., with firefighters from Mattawamkeag and Lincoln battling the fire while Medway covered Mattawamkeag's station, Coombs said.

The storage building had been converted from an old railroad refrigerator car. A quick firefighter response was key in keeping the flames from spreading to the business.

Coombs said state police and the State Fire Marshal's Office were both called to the scene after crews determined that the fire was suspicious.

"There's a possibility of a burglary at the business as well," said Coombs, who noted that some of the lights were on at the business when firefighters arrived.

Everything inside of the container was destroyed, Coombs said. The container had some metal and spare parts inside of it.

The fire remains under investigation.
