Oct. 04--OAKLAND -- A pedestrian running on Interstate 580 in Oakland's Dimond district was severely injured when he was struck by some cars Friday morning causing a series of other vehicle collisions that injured at least two other people and closed the freeway for more than an hour, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol said the unidentified man was running eastbound in the center divider of the eastbound lanes of the freeway near Fruitvale Avenue about 6:26 a.m.
The man was hit by at least one and possibly other vehicles, officials said. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.
It was not immediately known why the man was on the freeway or if a vehicle connected to him was found in the area.
At least four vehicles were damaged and at least two occupants of some of the vehicles had to be extricated by firefighters, officials said. They were taken to a hospital but their conditions were not known.
All eastbound lanes were shut down for a time but all lanes were reopened by 7:45 a.m.
