The driver of a Hoover pumper was forced to swerve on to the shoulder as the rig nearly collided with a driver who went around a stopped vehicle, video footage showed.

Engine 5 was responding to a medical call on Wednesday when the near-miss happened, AL.com reported.

With a rig responding ahead of Engine 5, oncoming drivers could be seen pulling off to the right as the rig got closer.

"He decided he didn't want to wait anymore and he pulled around,'' Hoover Fire Executive Officer Rusty Lowe told AL.com. "That put him directly in front of the engine headed for a head-on collision."

The apparatus went into a grassy shoulder, between a telephone pole and the passing vehicle.

No injuries were reported.
