Oct. 13--Seven people were hospitalized in fair condition Saturday after an accident and vehicle fire on Interstate 95 in St. Johns County.

Five people inside a passenger vehicle that caught fire and two in a pickup truck that rolled down an embankment were taken by ambulances following the 6 p.m. accident in the northbound lanes of the interstate at Florida 16, said Matthew Sara of St. Johns County Fire Rescue.

He said the passenger vehicle was on fire when rescue workers arrived, but the occupants had been able to get out before it was engulfed in flames. He said those people were taken to Baptist Medical Center South. The occupants of the truck were taken to Flagler Hospital, he said.

No other details of the accident being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol were immediately available.

One northbound lane of the interstate remained open following the accident, Sara said.
