Oct. 23--SEVERNA PARK -- An investigator with the Anne Arundel County Fire Marshal's Office is being credited with foiling an attempt to steal scrap metal from a construction site Tuesday afternoon.
Lt. Brian Mayers, a 24-year veteran of the county fire department, responded to the 500 block of Martin's Lane in Severna Park at 12:25 p.m. where he noticed a man and a woman taking scrap metal from a trash container, police spokesman Justin Mulcahy said.
Mayers was conducting a follow-up investigation into a fire that destroyed a home under construction Saturday night, Division Chief Keith Swindle said.
Mayers called the property manager who confirmed that no one had permission to take anything from the site.
The man and woman got into a Chevy S-10 pickup and drove away. Mayers followed the truck with his vehicle and called the police. Police stopped the truck in the area of Veterans Highway and Benfield Boulevard in Millersville.
Police identified the driver and passenger as being Paul Anthony Wilson, 36, and Kelly Lynn Stevens, 38, both of Crownsville. Support beams and metal ducting found in the truck was returned to the site.
Wilson and Stevens were charged with theft.
Mayers was named Career Firefighter of the Year at the Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce's Community Safety Awards ceremony last week.
