Tiny Oklahoma Department Answers Final Alarm

Oct. 29, 2013
The Oakhurst Fire Department lacked training, members and support.

A small Oklahoma fire department's doors are now closed.

Oakhurst volunteer firefighters will no longer respond to emergencies in their town.

In addition to a lack of training, the department didn't have the support of the community, according to Fox 23.com.

"It just seems like it's being taken away from us," firefighter Bobby Blansett told a reporter Monday night after the decision was made by a fire board.

District 2 County Commissioner Karen Keith told the reporters: "I have been dealing with this for four years. It's just very inconsistent, whether they have enough numbers. The lack of training is just horrific."

The department will have possession of their firehouse through the end of the year.

Berryhill, Sapulpa and Tulsa fire departments will divide Oakhurst's area.
