Maryland Fire Police Officer Struck by Vehicle Dies

A fire police officer struck by a vehicle last month has died.

David R. Barr Jr., 64, a fire police captain with Community Fire Company, was directing traffic at a crash scene Oct. 25 when he was hit by a vehicle. He was wearing a reflective vest.

Police said the glaring sun may have played a factor. The crash investigation continues.

The Cecil County Department of Emergency Services announced Barr's death Thursday afternoon on its Facebook page.

"On behalf of Director (Richard) Brooks and the entire Cecil County Department of Emergency Services, it is with deep regret that we announce the Line of Duty Death of Firefighter David Barr, Sr. of The Community Fire Company of Perryville, Md. Please keep the family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."

On Thursday afternoon, the hearse carrying Barr was escorted by numerous fire, rescue and police vehicles.

A retired firefighter from the Perry Point Veterans Administration Medical Center, Barr had been a fire police officer for 13 years. He also is a member of Water Witch Fire Company.

Barr died at Christiana Hospital where he has been since the wreck.
