Nov. 11--Shannon Deyon Dodson was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder in connection with her 5-year-old son's death after an apartment fire Friday, Colorado Springs police said in a news release Sunday.

An autopsy by the El Paso County Coroner's Office identified the boy as Jude Marray-Gomez and determined the cause of death to be drowning.

Dodson, 42, was booked into the El Paso County jail on suspicion of first-degree murder and held without bond, court records show.

Friday morning's blaze at the Hill Park Apartments, 4320 E. Pikes Peak Ave., reportedly started on a mattress in a bedroom of apartment 203, said Sunny Smaldino, Colorado Springs Fire Department spokeswoman.

Marray-Gomez and Dodson were taken to a local hospital, where the boy died. Police detectives were called to the scene and a death investigation began Friday.

The case remained under investigation by the Violent Crimes Unit in conjunction with the District Attorney's Office, police said.

According to police, this is the 29th homicide in Colorado Springs in 2013. A record-high 32 homicides occurred in 2011.
