Dog Rescued off Cliff by Texas Crew

The German Shepherd had been on the cliff since mid October.

Nov. 13--An Austin firefighter rappelled down a steep cliff on Wednesday afternoon to rescue Max, a German shepherd that had been missing since the mid-October floods.

Max was on the banks of the Onion Creek near Southeast Metropolitan Park, off Texas 71 in Del Valle. He was alert but would not walk toward rescuers, who instead picked him up and carried him.

Reuniting him with his owner will be easier than officials thought: Max was wearing a collar with his name and his owner's contact information. Firefighters reached the owner, who said Max had gone missing during the first round heavy October rains. The owner is coming to the park to get Max.

A ranger at the Southeast Metropolitan Park spotted the lost dog and called firefighters. The rescue took about an hour.
