Fire Melts Ice Plant in Kentucky

The fire in the Corbin plant was extensive.

Nov. 25--Emergency crews remained on the scene of a fire early Monday morning that heavily damaged an ice plant in Corbin.

Major Rob Jones of the Corbin Police Department said just before 7:30 a.m. that crews were still fighting hot spots at the fire scene and that traffic in the area was being disrupted.

The blaze broke out around 1:20 a.m. at the Corbin Ice Co. on Cumberland Falls Highway, according to Jones.

He said the plant sustained extensive damage.

"Fortunately, the fire did not get to the anhydrous ammonia," he said. "It it had, we would have much bigger problems."

Anhydrous ammonia, a gas used in the ice-making process, releases pungent, suffocating fumes.

Jones said a tanker truck was being summoned to remove the material from the fire site.

The cause of the blaze isn't known, Jones said.
