A two-alarm fire in Roanoke tore through two homes and caused heat damage to two others. Several dogs were rescued from the blaze.

Nov. 30--Four homes were damaged this afternoon after an intense blaze in southwest Roanoke, officials said.

The blaze tore through two homes in the 500 block of Marshall Avenue and damaged two others with intense heat, said Roanoke Fire-EMS spokeswoman Tiffany Bradbury.

Bradbury said firefighters were called to the scene just off downtown a little before 3 p.m. and found heavy flames coming from the two homes.

Crews called in a second-alarm response, which drew additional units to the scene, Bradbury said.

Battalion Chief Doug Rorrer said one of the homes was vacant and the fire appears to have started there.

Several dogs were rescued from the other home, Rorrer said. Six people were displaced from that home and another. They were being assisted by the Red Cross, spokeswoman Amy Whittaker said.

Investigators were seeking a cause this evening.
