Brophy, a volunteer in Robeson County since October, died at Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, Richard Edge with the Parkton Volunteer Fire Department, told reporters.

"David served the Parkton community with heart and soul. He was dedicated to his brothers and sisters of the fire department," Edge said. "We are truly saddened by the loss of a firefighter (whome) we considered family."

Edge said Brophy served more than 15 years with Frontier Volunteer Fire Company in Niagara Falls, N.Y., and also was among the those who responded to the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York City.
