Dec. 22--Naples firefighters rescued a pelican stranded in a tree Sunday.

They responded to reports of a pelican hanging from a pine tree branch at the end of Seagate Drive, over the beach, about 8:30 a.m. When firefighters arrived, they found the bird hanging about 40 feet in the air.

They eventually used a 35-foot extension ladder, lifting it under the pelican that was tangled in fishing line. Firefighters freed the bird by 11 a.m.

Some 50 onlookers watched as the pelican was brought to the ground, wrapped in a towel by an animal rescue worker and taken for rehabilitation. They applauded when the bird was freed.
