A young child suffered smoke inhalation and was hospitalized after a fire in a Houston apartment complex displaced up to 30 people.

Dec. 29--A two-alarm fire at a southwest Houston apartment complex sent one child to the hospital Saturday evening, authorities said.

Firefighters arrive to the blaze at the Falls of West park Apartments, 6130 Southwest Freeway, around 6:15 p.m.. Because of the significant amount of smoke and fire, immediately upgraded the fire to a two-alarm and called for additional units, said Houston Fire Department Capt. Ruy Lozano.

One child, about 4 or 5 years old, was taken to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported.

The fire, which damaged nine units, was extinguished about a half hour later, Lozano said. About 25 to 30 residents were displaced due to the blaze.

No further information was immediately available and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
