Snowstorm Hampers Ill. Crews at Fatal Fire

Snowfall made access to the scene difficult and the closest hydrant was frozen.

Jan. 06--FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS --Authorities identified a woman killed Sunday in a mobile home fire in Fairview Heights as 68-year-old Georgette L. Warren.

Firefighters were called to a a mobile home about 4:35 p.m. Sunday in the 300 block of Union Hill Road. Fire officials said Sunday's snowstorm slowed the department's response and made it difficult to get a truck and hoses close to the burning home.

"Fire hoses were pulled from the truck and dragged up the hill by hand," the Fairview Heights Fire Department said in a news release. "We were approximately 800 (feet) from the residence. To make matters worse, the first fire hydrant was frozen or broken so additional lines were needed to reach the next fire hydrant down the road."

The fire caused the home's roof to collapse and destroyed the home, officials said.

The state fire marshal was called to help investigate the blaze but authorities believe it was an accident.
