Norfolk firefighters rescued the woman from Friday's fire, but she died the next day.

Jan. 12--NORFOLK -- An 83 year-old woman rescued from a residential fire in the 8500 block of Devon Street on Friday afternoon has died.

Around 1:40 p.m. on Friday, witnesses reported seeing smoke coming from a two-story home and firefighters arrived on scene four minutes later, according to a news release from Battalion Chief Julian Williamson. At that time, heavy black smoke was coming from the front windows of both floors.

After hearing from a witness that a person was still inside, members of Rescue Company Two forced entry through a back door and found a woman on the first floor. She was removed from the house and was conscious throughout her rescue, the release said. She was transported to the hospital for burns and smoke inhalation but died early Saturday morning.

The house sustained fire and smoke damage to both floors and is uninhabitable. It did have smoke alarms, but they were not working, according to the release.

The fire is still under investigation.
