N.C. Rescue Squad Going Out of Service After 50 Years

Jan. 21, 2014
The Bolling Springs Rescue Squad is in the process of calling it quits.

Jan. 21--After more than 50 years of service, the Boiling Springs Rescue Squad is set to close, according to county documents obtained by The Star.

"Boiling Springs Rescue Squad (BSRS) is currently in the process of dissolving their franchise agreement and their initial charter. The BSRS charter states that in the event of a closure, all property will be given to Cleveland County," Cleveland County EMS Director Joe Lord wrote in a letter addressed to Cleveland County commissioners. The letter was included in agenda documents for tonight's commissioners meeting.

Commissioners are set to discuss the Boiling Springs Rescue Squad at tonight's 6 p.m. county meeting at the Cleveland County Administration Building at 311 E. Marion St. in Shelby.

"BSRS has been functioning in Cleveland County since 1960," according to the letter to commissioners. "Over the past several years they have struggled to keep the squad open."

The letter did not list a specific reason for those struggles.

The document shows "Cleveland County staff recommends Cleveland County Commissioners acquire the property and its contents valued at approximately $171,000."
