Feb. 01--A train carrying cars caught fire Friday evening in Hegewisch.
Firefighters were alerted to a train on fire near East 136th Street and South Brainard Avenue about 7:20 p.m., according to department spokesman Juan Hernandez.
One of the cars being transported on the train somehow caught fire, Hernandez said, and the fire then spread to the other cars.
Fire crews were initially delayed in battling the blaze, as the electricity on the nearby South Shore Line had to be cut, he said.
South Shore Line passenger service was affected by the fire, with one train heading east held up outside the Hegewisch Station, and another train headed into Chicago being held at the East Chicago Station.
