Gas Leaks Force Philly Neighborhood Evacuations

No injuries wee reported after separate gas leaks force evacuations in South Philadelphia and Chinatown.

Feb. 02--Separate gas leaks led to the evacuation of several homes in South Philadelphia and Chinatown late Saturday, fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

Residents of the 2200 block of South Eighth Street were ordered out of their homes at 5:19 p.m, officials said.

As of 9:30 p.m., occupants of only the odd-numbered side of the street had been allowed back home.

A second gas leak in the 900 block of Race Street was reported about 5:50 p.m., according to the Fire Department. That block was also evacuated.

Philadelphia Gas Works employees were investigating the the leaks, fire officials said.
