Several runs on Bald Mountain were closed and significant damage was done to snowmaking equipment after fire broke out on the mountain.

Feb. 02--SUN VALLEY -- An early morning fire on Saturday damaged structures and closed several ski runs on Bald Mountain.

Sun Valley Mountain personnel and Ketchum Fire Department responded to the incident site at the 8,200 foot level of the Bald Mountain Ski Area.

The fire caused significant damage to a snowmaking and cellular wireless communications facility and top lift stations of the Flying Squirrel Lift 9.

The fire caused extensive damage to Lift 9 including separation of the main ski lift cable. The damaged snowmaking facility housed air compressors.

Impacts to ongoing operations are expected to be minimal as Lift 9 was rarely used and the majority of snowmaking capabilities remain intact.

While the temporary closure of several runs will be necessary to allow for cleanup, the majority of runs on Bald Mountain remain open. There were no injuries related to this incident and the cause is under investigation.
