Feb. 05--Milwaukee police officers from District 4 are being credited with rescuing residents from a burning apartment building.

Officer Andrew Moutry was outside the District 4 station, 6929 W. Silver Spring Drive, when a resident pointed to rising smoke from an apartment building next door, according to a police news release.

Moutry called dispatchers to report the fire, and then he and officers Shalamar Leflore and Kenneth Daugherty ran to the building and knocked on doors to alert residents to the fire, the release stated.

As the smoke got thicker, the officers began kicking in doors if no one answered the door and continued checking second and third floors of the building until they were forced out by the smoke, officials said.

Milwaukee firefighters finished the search of the building and extinguished the fire. Several of the apartment units were destroyed and about 15 more were damaged by smoke and water.
