Suit Filed by Wash. Firefighter Terminated Over E-mail

He was fired from the Spokane Valley FD for sending e-mails about a fire service religious group.

A former firefighter has filed a lawsuit against the Spokane Valley Fire Department after he was tossed out for sending e-mails about a fire service religious group.

Jon Sprague started the Spokane County Christian Firefighter Fellowship in 2010.

He would use the department's official e-mail to send out newsletters and information about the group to other firefighters, the Spokesman-Review reported.

"Sprague was ordered repeatedly to stop sending the nonwork-related emails and was disciplined several times before being fired in 2012," according to the paper.

The Civil Service Commission upheld his termination last year, despite an appeal by Sprague.

In his suit against the department and former fire chief Mike Thompson, he said others used the department's e-mail for non-work communications without recourse.

Fire Chief Bryan Collins was unable to comment due to pending suit.
