Feb. 12--CAJON PASS -- A San Bernardino County Fire Department Search and Rescue Team rescued a motorist who was ejected 60 feet from a vehicle in the Cajon Pass.

The two-door sedan rolled and crashed about 200 feet from Cleghorn Fire Road, an elevated unpaved dirt road that leads to Silverwood Lake near Northbound Interstate 15, Capt. Jay Hausman said. The occupant that was ejected suffered moderate, but non-life-threatening injuries, he said.

The call initially came in at midnight on Saturday and was reported as a traffic collision on Northbound I-15 at Cleghorn Road, Hausman said. Fire officials responded but found no incident in the vicinity and returned to their quarters, he said.

Thirty minutes later, at about 12:30 a.m., one of the occupants who was uninjured hiked down the mountain and flagged down a California Highway Patrol deputy, Hausman said.

"There was a lot of moisture in the air and fog, which hindered anyone from seeing the crash," Hausman said. "Due to the steep terrain and low visibility it took extra time to locate, treat and package the (injured person)."

After the occupant was found, officials treated the injured person on scene and later transported them to a local trauma center, Hausman said. The rescue operation took three hours. County Fire officials responded in two fire engines, two rescue trucks and a medic ambulance.

CHP officials were investigating the collision.
