Off-Campus House Fire in Md. Claims Student

Feb. 14, 2014
Three other Frostburg University students escaped the early morning blaze Friday.

The Maryland fire marshal's office is investigating a house fire that claimed the life of a person, possibly a Frostburg University student early Friday.

Three others managed to escape the fire reported just after 5 a.m.

The second floor collapsed into the first, fire officials said.

The victim's body has been transported to the Maryland Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

The name of the victim has not been released.

It has not been determined if the smoke detector was working. Also, it did not appear that heavy snow hampered firefighting efforts, the fire marshals said.

On Friday afternoon, FU officials released the following statement: "We are saddened to inform you that a fire on Bowery Street early this morning left one person dead and three others displaced. The name of the victim is being withheld until positive identification has been made at the Maryland State Medical Examiner’s Office, and the next of kin has been notified. The three persons who were displaced are students, and they are now being housed in a residence hall on campus.

As we learn more from fire and police officials, we will share updates with the campus. Please keep all involved in your thoughts and prayers, especially the individuals affected and their loved ones, and the first-responders at the scene."
