April 18--Milwaukee fire investigators were combing through evidence Friday morning, searching for the cause of a day care center fire and nearby garage fire.

The fire was reported about 4 a.m. Friday at the former Dreamland Child Care Center, which is inside a strip mall at 6205 N. Teutonia Ave. The fire was quickly extinguished and the total damage was estimated at $25,000, official said. Chief Mark Rohlfing told WTMJ-TV that investigators believe someone broke in and set fire to a desk.

The day care moved two months ago to a new location and the building has been vacant since then, an employee at Dreamland Child Care Center on Center St. said.

As firefighters were working to extinguish that fire, another was reported just behind them, Deputy Chief Terry Lintonen said.

A garage fire was reported in the 6100 block of N. 35th St., right behind the strip mall. The damage to the building was at $36,100 and contents was reported at $58,000.

Milwaukee fire and police investigators also continued to investigate the cause of a duplex fire in which firefighters rescued a man from a second-floor bedroom.

The fire occurred just before 5 p.m. at a house in the 5300 block of W. Nash Ave.

The man was found on the second floor, and he was without a pulse and was not breathing, Lintonen said. Fire department paramedics were able to revive the man and took him to Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare St. Joseph's hospital, where he remained Friday morning for treatment.

Three people who lived in the first-floor unit of the duplex were displaced and were assisted by the Red Cross, Lintonen said.
