May 01--North Las Vegas firefighters "overwhelmingly" approved a deal to give up millions of dollars in back pay owed to them by the city in exchange for helping fix the city's troubled finances, union president Jeff Hurley said today.
Members of the International Association of Firefighters Local 1607 finished their voting today.
The union is the first of the city's four employee bargaining units to approve the agreement hammered out last month.
The four unions, which include firefighters, police officers, police supervisors and office workers, agreed to give back a combined $10.4 million under the deal. The move will help close the city's $18 million budget deficit for the fiscal year that starts in July. It also helped avert a state takeover of the city's finances.
The police officers union started voting today.
