A Wyoming forestry officer collapsed and died Saturday during an exercise.
Fire Crew Supervisor Ted Drake, 62, was participating in a fitness test for certification when he was stricken, the USFA reported.
The incident occurred in Newcastle.
Drake supervised and trained inmates called 'Smoke Busters,' a well-respected wildland firefighting team. They also are involved in other projects on state and federal lands.
This brings to 39 the number of firefighters who have died on duty so far in 2014.
