A 6-year-old boy suffered facial burns when he and three other boys took gasoline and matches and played with fire behind a school in Ypsilanti Township.

May 27--A 6-year-old boy was burned in the face Monday after he and three others played with fire and gasoline behind a school in Ypsilanti Township, according to the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office.

The 6-year-old, two 9-year-olds and an 8-year-old found a gas can and took it behind Kaiser Elementary School, which is in their neighborhood.

"They took some matches from one of the homes and began setting things on fire behind the school," sheriff's office spokesman Derrick Jackson said in an e-mail.

One of the boys tossed the gasoline on the fire and it "burst up," burning the 6-year-old, who was closest to the fire, he said. Nobody was arrested, and the injured boy was taken to a hospital for his burns.

The boy's mom initially had said that the boy was burned by the other boys, but investigators determined the circumstances were accidental, Jackson said.
