Teens Survive 80-foot Plunge Off Hawaii Highway

The vehicle landed on the roof after leaving Hana Highway in Maui and they were airlifted to safety.

June 01--Two teenagers survived when the vehicle they were riding in veered off Hana Highway and fell 80 feet down a ravine on Sunday morning.

According to a Maui Fire Department report, the vehicle landed on its roof. The two occupants -- and 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl, were able to exit the vehicle on their own and were airlifted one at a time to a secured landing zone.

Both suffered head and neck injuries and were transported by ambulance to Maui Memorial Medical Center in stable condition.

The vehicle left the highway near mile marker 42.5 in Kipahulu around 9:55 a.m.
