June 04--An El Paso firefighter who fell off an overpass early Monday is recovering from surgery, officials said Tuesday.

Fire Lt. Rafael Navarrete is out of intensive care at University Medical Center of El Paso and is in good condition, the Fire Department said on its Twitter page. Navarrete had fractures to his face.

Officials said Navarrete was part of emergency crews at the scene of serious crash when he fell about 20 feet through an opening of an overpass on Loop 375 near Montwood Drive in far East El Paso.

In the traffic accident, a woman and two men were hospitalized after they were hit by a pickup that drove onto the emergency lane where the three had stopped to fix a flat tire.
