June 14--A woman was killed and seven people were injured in an accident involving two passenger vehicles and a city bus Friday morning.
The accident occurred shortly before 8:30 a.m. on North Ninth Street near Coldwell Avenue, Modesto Police Department spokeswoman Heather Graves said.
A 2001 Dodge Ram pickup traveling north collided with a 2006 Nissan Altima going the same direction. The Altima in turn hit a Modesto city bus that was stopped at a bus stop. The pickup came to rest upside down in the southbound lanes, said Alan Ernst, acting operations chief of the Modesto Regional Fire Authority. The truck driver and the Altima driver suffered major injuries and were taken by ambulance to area hospitals.
The Altima driver, a 64-year-old Modesto woman, died from her injuries, Graves said. Her identity has not been released, pending notification of relatives.
Ernst said the Altima driver was trapped in her vehicle and needed extrication, which took less than 20 minutes.
The 73-year-old driver of the pickup was able to get out of the vehicle but was in critical condition Friday afternoon, Ernst said. Six riders on the bus suffered minor injuries, authorities said.
In addition to police, there were three fire engines, one firetruck and four ambulances on the scene.
Both the northbound and southbound lanes of traffic on North Ninth Street between Tully Road and Coldwell were closed from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. while the scene of the collision was processed for evidence.
