Fire at 'Cluttered' Mich. Home Leaves One Dead

Officials are unsure if the clutter inside the Troy home prevented the man from being able to escape.

June 19--One person is dead and another injured after fire ripped through a house in Troy on Wednesday night.

The blaze was at a 1,500-square-foot house in the 100 block of Chopin Street, east of Livernois and north of Maple, according to the Troy Fire Department. Two people, a male and a female, had been in the house at the time of the fire shortly before 10 p.m.

Names and ages of the victims, who are reported to be cousins, are unknown, the department said in a news release.

The female, who was taken to Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak and transferred to Detroit Receiving Hospital in unknown condition, had apparently tried unsuccessfully to remove the male before firefighters arrived, the release said. She was found outside the house and he was dead near a back doorway.

The fire started in the male's bedroom, where most fire damage was confined, but there was smoke damage throughout the house, the department said.

The inside of the house was extremely cluttered and difficult to maneuver in, but it was unknown if that prevented the male from escaping, the department said.

Firefighters were at the scene for more than two hours. The cause of the fire is unknown, but the investigation is continuing, the release said.
