June 29--A man was critically injured during a fire in Deerfield Beach that also injured a deputy, according to a Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue spokesman.
The fire broke out shortly before 8 a.m. Saturday in an apartment in the Tivoli Lakes development, just east of Interstate 95 and north of Southwest 10th Street.
A Broward sheriff's deputy tried to rescue the resident in the burning unit and received injuries that were minor, including a burn to a hand and possible smoke inhalation, fire-rescue spokesman Mike Jachles said. He was treated at Broward Health North.
The resident, who had sustained third-degree burns to more than 30 percent of his body, then was taken to the Burn Unit in the Ryder Trauma Center.
Firefighters found him outside the fully engulfed unit when they arrived. They rescued the man's dog from inside the burning apartment and two neighbors trapped in a balcony above that unit.
It took firefighters about 15 minutes to extinguish the fire. The blaze gutted the burning apartment and damaged two other units with smoke damage, according to Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue.
Four people were displaced from their homes. The American Red Cross was assisting them with temporary accommodations.
The cause and origin of the fire is being investigated.
