July 03--CELINA -- A driver fell asleep at the wheel Wednesday, plunging into Grand Lake.
At 12:49 p.m., Nancy Leighner, 76, of Rockford, was driving a 2006 Saturn Vue when she turned onto Elm Grove Avenue. She was headed toward Market Street when authorities said she fell asleep. She failed to negotiate the curve, going over the concrete riprap before driving into the lake. The car drifted north for a short distance before sinking up to the roof. Leighner, uninjured, was able to exit the car. She was then stranded on the roof of the vehicle several yards from shore.
Skylar Green, 15, of Portland, Indiana, saw Leightner drive into the lake while taking photos with his mother. He grabbed a life jacket and swam out to Leighner to give her the life jacket. He then stayed with Leighner until the Celina Fire Department was able to get to her with a boat and get her to safety.
