July 27--STOCKTON -- A woman in her 70s was sleeping Saturday morning when her south Stockton home caught fire, authorities said.

The fire was reported about 7:20 a.m. in the 2000 block of South Union Street, the Stockton Fire Department said. Neighbors managed to wake the woman and alert her to the danger, officials said.

Fire crews arrived to find heavy fire at the back of the residence, Chief's Operator Art Ray said. The fire caused major damage to the back of the home and the attic, but firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to neighboring homes, Ray said.

Fire officials believe the fire started near the back patio, but the cause was still under investigation, Ray said.
