July 31--KENT -- Seven children and counselors managed to escape a fire on Thursday that destroyed a cabin and damaged two more at Club Getaway, a resort in Kent, Fire Chief Eric Epstein said.

The counselor and children were not injured, but were checked on scene by medics. State police said a total of 12 children were checked by medics.

"It was a good outcome," Epstein said. "We were pretty lucky."

The fire, reported at 7:12 a.m., was centered in one cabin, but damaged those on either side.

"When we arrived there it was a fully involved cabin and there was extension to the cabins to the left and right," Epstein said.

A second cabin was heavily damaged and the third sustained damage to its siding, he said.

The state and local fire marshal were working to determine the cause.

Firefighters controlled the flames in about 30 minutes and cleared the scene shortly after 9 a.m.

The 300-acre resort is at 59 South Kent Road.

Firefighters from Kent, New Milford, Cornwall and Warren fought the fire.

One firefighter suffered a minor injury and was treated at the scene, Epstein said.
