Two Men Collide on Md. Zip Line, One Critically Injured

Aug. 2, 2014
A man in his 20s struck his head on another man on a Frederick County zip line, lost consciousness and was flown from the scene for treatment.

Aug. 01--A man was flown to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma after being injured in a zip line collision at Upward Enterprises, Inc. Friday, Frederick County Division of Fire and Rescue Services Lt. Jeff Shippey said.

Shippey said he did not know the man's name but said he appeared to be in his 20s. He said the man was unconscious following the collision and remained so after being stabilized.

The man's head struck another man's shoulder on the zip line. The other man was not hurt.

It was not immediately clear how the collision occurred.

The zip line is operated by Upward Enterprises on property that the company leases at The Claggett Center, off Buckeystown Pike in Adamstown, Center Executive Director Joe Kerner said Friday.

Upward Enterprises could not immediately be reached.

A description of the zip line on the company's website describes its setting in a wooded area that traverses 600 feet through trees 60 feet above a creek.

Shippey said the zip line is located about two miles behind The Claggett Center in a mountainous area that was hard for crews to reach via a narrow path that included crossing ravines, Shippey said. Crews used all-terrain vehicles to reach the scene and a Maryland State Police helicopter used a hoist to lift the man from the area.

Shippey said people on the scene removed the man from the zip line after the collision.
