Aug. 05--There were no injuries Monday when passengers of a United Airlines flight were forced to get off the plane on the runway at Pittsburgh International Airport because of smoke in the plane, airport spokeswoman JoAnn Jenny said.
The incident began at 9:20 p.m. when the crew on the flight from Newark to Pittsburgh notified the FAA tower that there was smoke in the airplane, Jenny said.
The plane landed at 9:53 p.m. and was evacuated. Firefighters did not find a fire and it was not immediately known what the source of the smoke was, Jenny said.
The passengers were taken to the gate by shuttle bus, she said.
The runway remained closed until 10:12 p.m. when the plane was towed from the runway to the gate, Jenny said.
Airline personnel could not be reached for immediate comment.
